Even I feel the same because communication is very important in the community, though there are ways to do so (like e-mail and all) but still direct messaging would be really cool and easy way. |

Yes, it would be a quite interesting idea and can be enhanced more by giving users access not only to DMs also by making groups which would be private for organization works. So that team members can actually interact and dicuss upcoming feature within GitHub. |

I think it's a necessary function for developers to collaborate. |

Very much needed. I am surprised that eventhough Github has authentication with gitter, but no formal way to create rooms and message personally. |

I currently ran into a use case, where I want to collaborate, but we are strangers and need to exchange some syn-ack stuff. DM in github would make it easier (and safer). |

I understand that GitHub is meant to support open source and the developer community, but when developers share their opinions with each other, they interact with each other in Issues and Discussions in the repository.
Of course, there is a good means of e-mail, but e-mail does not provide a means of authenticating that I am a Github user.
So, how about adding a function to exchange messages between developers through GitHub.
Conversation as a community platform is considered a necessary feature.
Rather than accessing each other through e-mail, I wish there was a feature to have a message or chat through Github!
