Hi GitHub Support,

I'm an open-source maintainer and currently have a free Copilot Pro subscription through the GitHub Maintainer Program.

I can see the Copilot coding agent settings in my repositories, but I get a message saying I can’t assign issues to Copilot because I don’t have Copilot Pro+ or Enterprise.

As per the documentation, OSS maintainers are supposed to receive Copilot Pro+ access. Could you please confirm if I'm eligible and help me enable the Copilot Coding Agent fully?

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention regarding your inability to assign issues to GitHub Copilot despite having a free Copilot Pro subscription through the GitHub Maintainer Program.

Current Situation

The Copilot Coding Agent feature (which allows you to assign issues to Copilot) is currently exclusive to the Copilot Pro+ plan. While the GitHub Maintainer Program provides you with free access to GitHub Copilot Pro, it does not currently include the Pro+ tier benefits.

From the documentation:

• Copilot Pro provides unlimited completions, chat, access to more advanced models like Claude 3.7 Sonnet and o1, and code review features
• Copilot Pro+ ($39/month) includes everything in Pro plus the Coding Agent feature that allows assigning issues to Copilot

Options for You

Here are a few options you might consider:

1. Request an Upgrade: Since you're participating in the GitHub Maintainer Program and were expecting Pro+ level access, you could request an upgrade to your current plan through GitHub Support directly (not through this community channel). The documentation may not be fully aligned with the actual benefits provided to maintainers.

2. Upgrade to Pro+: If your open-source work requires the Coding Agent feature, consider upgrading to the Pro+ tier. As an active maintainer, you might qualify for special pricing through GitHub's various support programs for open source.

3. Use Alternative Workflows: Until you can access the Coding Agent feature, you can still leverage Copilot Pro's capabilities by:

   • Using Copilot Chat to ask it to help with specific tasks
   • Using Copilot in your IDE to help implement solutions for issues manually

This seems to have changed and GitHub Copilot coding agent is now also available for "those on Student, Teacher, or OSS Maintainer Pro plans".
