Adding google as authentication method to existing github account fails

The docs say this:

If you have an existing account created with a password, you can add your social login email to the account. This allows you to use your social login identity as a first-factor (password) replacement when you sign in to GitHub.

Steps I tried:

1. Authenticate using my existing email and password.
2. Navigate to Settings > Passwords and authentication > sign in methods
3. Click on connect next to the Google option
4. Invokes the authentication GUI
5. Click continue with Google
6. Ask me to logout before I can do this which does not make sense to me because if I'm logged out I am not adding the google authentication mechanism to my existing account?

I was having the same problem as describe here.

I think the root cause is that my GH email address is foo+github@gmail.com.

After adding and verifying a second email address of foo@gmail.com, I was able to get my Google Account connected.

Unfortunately, the "connection" is attached to my foo@gmail.com address, not the one I really want to use. It makes no sense to have both.

Personally, I think this is a bug in GH.

It should be concerned about my Google Account ID, not my email address.

If the email address associated with my Google Account is not in your system (as in my case), then the flow should trigger additional work on the Google login portion (e.g., Google would prompt me for my password and related).

As I had the same issue, I found an possibility to do the registration as wanted!
When I tried the steps described with my existing account at GitHub, I faced the same issue.
Here are the steps that solved it for me:

1. Authenticate using my existing email and password.
2. Navigate to Settings > Emails
3. Add your gmail address as additional email for signing it to you account
4. Verify the gmail address via the recieved mail

And now you can:

1. Navigate to Settings > Passwords and authentication > sign in methods
2. Click on connect next to the Google option
3. Invokes the authentication GUI
4. Click continue with Google --> now it will accept your gmail address and connect the account as well!
