Here are the steps you can take:
When you set up 2FA, GitHub would have provided you with a set of backup codes that you can use to log in if you lose access to your authentication method (e.g., your phone). If you have these backup codes saved somewhere, you can use them to sign in.
If you don’t have backup codes, you’ll need to use GitHub's recovery options: Go to the GitHub login page and enter your username/email. Click "Forgot password?" and follow the instructions to reset your password. You should receive an email with a reset link. After resetting your password, you’ll be prompted to set up 2FA again. Since your phone is broken, you can follow the steps for recovery via SMS or use recovery codes if you have any.
If the above options don’t work, the next step is to contact GitHub Support directly: Go to GitHub Support Explain your situation (i.e., phone is broken, can't access 2FA) and provide any other information that might help, such as your GitHub username and any details related to your account. They should be able to assist you in disabling 2FA temporarily or help you regain access to your account. I hope this helps you |

Hi! @EarlRui Use recovery codes – When you first set up 2FA, GitHub provided recovery codes. If you still have them saved (e.g., in a password manager, file, or printed copy), you can use one of those to log in. Check for backup methods – If you set up another 2FA method (like an authenticator app on a second device or a security key), you can use that instead. Account recovery – If you don’t have recovery codes or backup methods, you’ll need to start GitHub’s 2FA account recovery process Go to the login page, enter your username/password, and when asked for the 2FA code, click “I don’t have my 2FA device”. You’ll then be guided through recovery. GitHub might verify your identity through your email, previous activity, or security verification. Contact GitHub Support – If recovery codes aren’t available and the automated recovery isn’t working, you’ll need to open a support ticket with GitHub |

Hi @EarlRui, If you’ve lost access to the phone or authenticator app linked to your GitHub account, you won’t be able to pass 2FA directly. The steps you can try are: Recovery Codes – When you first enabled 2FA, GitHub provided a set of recovery codes. If you still have those saved somewhere, you can use one of them to sign in. Registered Devices / Security Keys – If you had set up another device or a hardware key (like YubiKey), you can use that instead. Account Recovery – If neither of the above is available, you’ll need to go through GitHub’s account recovery process: Go to the GitHub 2FA recovery page Enter your username/email, and click "I don’t have my authentication device or recovery codes" Follow the instructions to verify your identity. GitHub may email you at your registered address, and in some cases, account recovery can take a few days for security reasons. Unfortunately, there’s no shortcut—GitHub Support is the only way to regain access if you don’t have recovery codes or backup methods. Hope this helps you get back into Copilot again! |

Since your phone linked to 2FA is broken, you won’t be able to complete the authentication yourself. |

Hi @EarlRui 👋 Since your phone with 2FA is broken, you have three possible ways back in: Recovery codes – If you saved the 10 codes GitHub gave you when you enabled 2FA, you can use one of those instead of your phone. Trusted devices / backup methods – Check if you’re still logged into GitHub on any browser, or if you set up SMS, GitHub Mobile, or a hardware key. Account recovery (last resort) – If you don’t have codes or backups, you’ll need to start the recovery process here: When filling it out, include your username, the email linked to your account, and (if you pay for Copilot) billing details. GitHub Support will manually verify and help you reset 2FA — usually takes a few business days. Once you’re back in, I recommend re-enabling 2FA with multiple methods (authenticator + GitHub Mobile + recovery codes + maybe a hardware key) so this can’t happen again. Hope this helps you get Copilot working again 🙏 |
