Why this UX Falls Short

👎 The input isn’t labeled with the expected credential

• A blank xxxxxx box is ambiguous: is it a TOTP code, password, passkey, or SMS?

👎 The primary action (“Verify”) doesn’t say what will be verified

• No feedback loop: users don’t know if it’s checking a code, a password, or something else.

👎 Secondary options are non-descript

• “Use your password,” has no context and is hidden below.
• The default path looks mandatory even when alternatives exist.

👎 No inline error preview or microcopy

• If you enter the wrong information based on format, you only find out after submitting.

What Could Make It Clear

✅ Add a precise field label + helper text

• Label: “Enter 6‑digit authenticator code”

• Helper: “Or choose another method below: password, passkey/security key, GitHub Mobile”

✅ Make the button contextual

• Instead of generic Verify, change it dynamically:

“Verify TOTP code”
“Verify password”
etc., depending on method selected

✅ Show method choices as tabs/chips at the top (not buried)

• Tabs: Authenticator | Password | Passkey/Security Key | Mobile

✅ Provide immediate validation

• Reject non‑digit input and codes ≠6 before submit

• Show inline error: “Expecting a 6‑digit code”
