I go between iOS and Android very frequently, I think a good feature would be to automatically know whether my project is Xcode or Android Studio based on the project directory or file extension, because it is tedious having to change it in the settings every time I want to open with Xcode or Android Studio

yes, this is I guess a valid request but while it's not yet there, maybe these workarounds might help

1. Use OS-level “open with” defaults (macOS Finder or Windows Explorer can associate file types with apps).

2. Scripts or aliases:

   • macOS Automator / shell script → detect project type → open with correct IDE.

   • Example:

     if [ -f "build.gradle" ]; then
       open -a "Android Studio" .
     elif ls *.xcodeproj 1> /dev/null 2>&1; then
       open -a "Xcode" .
     fi

3. Editor-agnostic approach: If possible, use VS Code or JetBrains (AppCode/IntelliJ) for cross-platform dev, to reduce switching.

That would definitely be a useful feature! Until it’s officially supported, here are a couple of ways you can make the process easier without manually switching settings every time:

1. Detect project type automatically with scripts

   • iOS projects almost always contain an .xcworkspace or .xcodeproj file.
   • Android projects usually have a build.gradle file at the root.
   • You can write a simple shell script or Node.js script to check for these files and open the right IDE automatically.

   Example (macOS shell script):

   #!/bin/bash
   if [ -f "ios/YourApp.xcworkspace" ] || [ -f "ios/YourApp.xcodeproj" ]; then
       echo "Opening in Xcode..."
       open ios/YourApp.xcworkspace
   elif [ -f "android/build.gradle" ]; then
       echo "Opening in Android Studio..."
       open -a "Android Studio" android/
   else
       echo "Could not detect project type."
   fi

   Save this as open-project.sh, run chmod +x open-project.sh, and then just run ./open-project.sh from your project root.

2. Create separate launch configurations
   If you’re using VS Code, you can add tasks to your tasks.json that detect and open the right IDE depending on the project. Then you only need to hit the command palette and run the right task.

3. Use environment variables
   You can set an alias or environment variable so that a single command like openproject chooses between Xcode or Android Studio for you.
