Hello,
I launched Visual Studio Code today, and immediately got a popup saying "The extension 'GitHub Copilot app modernization' wants to sign in using GitHub."

Can someone clarify what this is?

...well...at least it asked...but having to find this conversation to even have a guess at what's being requested and why is terrible UX... Please consider improving the UX around this extension. Thanks!

FWIW, I as able to find two extensions using the "modernization" name and remove them and this issue went away. These were likely auto-added or added during "quick consent" moment (i.e. "Do you want other helpful tools for ____?"). In any case, removing those got rid of this nag screen.

Yeah - i noticed it installed 2 java "app modernisation" plugins. I never got any prompt or anything, just there when I opened VSC this morning

This is significant UX misstep. The prompt keeps coming back grabbing focus, interrupting work, breaking task focus. It cannot dismiss the sign in prompt enough apparently.

The solution is to uninstall all Github Copilot components and restart VSC.

So basically, with the updates to Visual Studio Code, Microsoft installed Github Copilot extensions as a part of it. The thing is, in order to utilize this Copilot extension you need to have a GitHub Copilot Free account and then provide the sign in to the extension so that the extensions can be utilized.

Like boardofchris wrote you can get rid of the prompt by uninstalling the Github Copilot extensions or if you think you may utilize them in the future you can always just disable them. If you disable the Github Copilot Chat - I know it will ask, since it relies on the other ones, that those will be disabled as well.

That popup is normal.

Hardly normal when it keeps popping up every time you open VSCode, even when you click Cancel - there is no option to turn it off from the prompt.

I had to look at the other comments in here to search for "modernization" in the plugins, and uninstall the culprit.

No, it was not an acceptable UX at all. If that's the new "normal" then I want nothing to do with it.

Normalising the blind acceptance of token use undermines security. This extension should not be a default install.
