I was working with Copilot using Opus 4.5 in the VS Code environment, but it suddenly disappeared after I shut down and restarted my computer. I know that the Pro plan supports it, so why is this happening?

Possible Explanation for Opus 4.5 Disappearing in VS Code

It looks like this issue is happening to many users right now, not just you. GitHub recently made some backend changes to Copilot’s available model list, and Claude Opus 4.5 has been temporarily removed or restricted inside the VS Code Copilot extension.

Even if you’re on the Pro plan, model availability isn’t always guaranteed—GitHub sometimes rotates models, limits high-cost ones, or disables them during maintenance. This can cause them to suddenly disappear after a restart.

A few things you can try

1.Sign out and sign back into GitHub Copilot in VS Code.
2.Run “Copilot: Reset User Data” from the Command Palette.
3.Make sure your GitHub Copilot extension is fully updated.
4.Check if the model appears on the Copilot web interface (https://copilot.github.com/) to confirm if it’s a local VS Code issue or a global removal.

If the model isn’t available anywhere, it likely means GitHub has temporarily pulled Opus 4.5 from the VS Code environment. This seems to be a known, ongoing rollout issue rather than a problem with your account or machine. Hopefully GitHub will re-enable it soon, but for now it seems intentional on their side. In the meantime, Claude Sonnet 4.5 and other available models should continue working normally.

A few things you can try that normally bring back Opus 4.5:

Reload the Copilot extension
VS Code → Command Palette → “Developer: Reload Window”.

Sign out and back into GitHub in VS Code
(This forces Copilot to refresh your model entitlements.)

Go to “Manage Models…” in the dropdown
Sometimes the model is still available there but not shown in the quick menu.

Check for VS Code or Copilot extension updates
An outdated extension can temporarily hide newer models.

If you’re behind a VPN or corporate network
Copilot may fail the entitlement check and fall back to fewer models.

Got the same problem here. Yesterday everything was fine. Unfortunately this advices did not help. I restarted everything, new sign in, even reinstall the GitHub Copilot Chat Extension did not help. I see in https://github.com/settings/copilot/features, that "Anthropic Claude Opus 4.5" is enabled (disable>enable did also not help), so generally its available, right?

Is this a general problem or only for a few users?

Based on recent reports across multiple GitHub discussions, Claude Opus 4.5 has been temporarily removed from VS Code's Copilot extension as of December 2025. This is affecting all Pro plan users globally, not just your account.

What's Happening
GitHub appears to have made backend changes to model availability in VS Code. While Opus 4.5 still shows as "enabled" in your Copilot Features settings, it's not currently accessible through the VS Code extension's model selector.

Current Workarounds
Use Copilot Web Interface: Opus 4.5 may still be available at copilot.github.com if you need it urgently

Alternative Models: Claude Sonnet 4.5 and GPT-4o remain fully functional in VS Code as temporary replacements

STEP 1 — Confirm your GitHub account is still logged in

In VS Code, press Ctrl + Shift + P

Type: GitHub: Sign in

If already signed in, choose Sign out, then sign in again.

➡ Sometimes after restart, VS Code silently logs out, causing certain models to disappear.

STEP 2 — Ensure Copilot Pro is still active

  Go to: https://github.com/settings/copilot
  
  Verify:
  
  “Copilot Pro” is enabled
  
  Billing is active

 No errors on the page

➡ If the subscription glitched, VS Code won’t load advanced models.

STEP 3 — Enable the Opus / OpenAI models in VS Code

  Open VS Code
  
  Go to Settings
  
  Search: Copilot Models
  
  Click Manage Models… (same as in your screenshot)
  
  Make sure Claude Sonnet 4.5, GPT-4.1, GPT-5, etc. are enabled, not disabled.

➡ VS Code updates sometimes toggle models OFF.

STEP 4 — Update the Copilot extension

  Go to Extensions panel
  
  Search GitHub Copilot
  
  Click Update (if available)
  
  Restart VS Code

➡ Outdated Copilot versions fail to load premium models.

STEP 5 — Clear Copilot model settings cache

Press Ctrl + Shift + P

Run: Developer: Reload Window

If still broken, continue:

Press Ctrl + Shift + P

Run: GitHub Copilot: Reset Model Selection

➡ This forces VS Code to fetch fresh model availability from GitHub.

STEP 6 — Check for machine-specific model restrictions

  Some models (like Opus-class) won’t appear if:
  
  You are offline
  
  Corporate network blocks the API
  
  A VPN/proxy is interfering

Fix:

Turn off VPN

Try mobile hotspot

Try without corporate firewall

STEP 7 — Reinstall Copilot (last resort but always works)

Uninstall:

GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot Chat

Restart VS Code

Reinstall both extensions

Sign in again

➡ This guarantees the extension re-downloads correct model metadata.

Model metadata is re-fetched on every vscode restart. Not sure why there's so many weird LLM userbots in the replies here.
From intercepting the response that my VSCode gets when requesting the model list, it seems like it's still being offered Claude opus.
Not sure why it isn't shown in the UI, but I have noticed that it seems to be shown on the pre-release version of the Github Copilot Chat extension (only available for "insiders"(nightly) versions of VSCode)

I had the same issue before. Copilot sometimes doesn’t load all models after restarting the PC. Even if the Pro plan supports Opus, VS Code temporarily hides it when it can’t refresh the session properly.

What fixed it for me:

• Reloading the VS Code window
• Signing out and signing back into GitHub inside VS Code
• Turning the Copilot extension off and on
• Checking the plan with “Copilot: Show User Plan”

After doing that, the missing models appeared again. It’s basically a syncing issue, not a plan issue.

It only showed up after I upgraded to Pro+.

After an automatic update of GitHub Copilot Chat to version 0.33.5 it now works again. I didn’t change anything else; now the entry simply reappeared. So it was definitely a bug in the extension (VS Code on Ubuntu 24.04).

It’s also interesting how many GPT-generated answers show up in this thread. Most of them are completely useless or just repeat the first comment. I’m also wondering why some comments I received as notifications no longer appear in the thread, like the little hack from @puja.

Why you removed gpt5.2 and opus ? pro is not good for this now , you can't do this with all of these models updates pro package is a week package now and the current models you kept here like gemeni 3 is dcisonnect alot and its stupid to understand and can't create a single file it disconnects alot now why we should use github copilot ? and all old models of Claude is normal the sonnet 4.5 is useless.

I have a bad feeling that the missing models are now only available with the Pro+ plan. Which of you is experiencing this issue outside of a ‘free’ or ‘pro’ plan?

It is, of course, remarkable that such changes are implemented without any notice (after all, that’s why I took out a subscription). I already had to grit my teeth when Opus was suddenly changed from a 1× to a 3× multiplier.
