In GitHub Discussions, answer verification is a feature specifically designed for categories formatted as Q&A. It allows the community to identify the most helpful response, transforming a threaded conversation into a searchable knowledge base.

Here is a breakdown of how the process works:

1. The Q&A Category Requirement

Verification isn't available in every discussion. It only functions if the discussion is posted in a category where the "Question & Answer" format is enabled. Maintainers can toggle this setting in the repository or organization settings.
2. Who Can Verify an Answer?

To prevent "gaming" the system and ensure accuracy, only specific users have the authority to mark a comment as the answer:

The Discussion Author: The person who started the discussion.

Maintainers: Anyone with write access (or higher) to the repository.

3. The Visual Workflow

When a helpful comment is posted, an "Answer" button (usually a checkmark icon) appears on each reply. Once clicked:

The Highlight: The chosen comment is highlighted with a green border and a "Selected as answer" badge.

Top-Level Preview: A snippet of the answer is automatically pinned to the top of the discussion, immediately below the original post. This allows future visitors to find the solution without scrolling.

Discussion List Status: In the main discussion list, the thread will show a green checkmark icon, signaling to others that the query is resolved.
