I have encountered the same issue with German umlauts (ü, ö, ä) using the Rest API. I noticed that you can replace the umlauts with their respective unicode character and then it works, e.g ü -> I ended up create a branch ruleset that prevents creating such branches. As target branch, select "Include by pattern". I specified |

Look, I get it—it’s incredibly annoying when a tool barfs out a generic "500 Internal Server Error" just because you used a character it didn't expect. It feels like the CLI is saying, "Something broke, but I'm not going to tell you what." The reality is that while we live in a Unicode world, many backend systems still get "hiccups" when non-ASCII characters hit specific API endpoints. GitHub’s internal routing likely fails to parse the branch name correctly, leading to a server-side crash rather than a clean error message. Quick Workarounds Quote the Ref: Sometimes wrapping the branch name in literal quotes helps the shell pass it correctly: gh workflow run main.yml --ref 'your-branch-name' Check your Locale: Make sure your terminal environment is set to UTF-8. Run locale in your terminal; if it doesn't say UTF-8, that’s likely your culprit. Is it a bug? thanks me letter |

Summary
Triggering a workflow dispatch against a branch whose name contains non-ASCII characters (e.g., Japanese) returns HTTP 500 from the GitHub REST API. This happens both via gh CLI and direct curl.
Steps to Reproduce
gh CLI
GH_DEBUG=api gh workflow run script-worker.yml --ref "テスト" -R yamachu/play-actions
curl (same result)
curl -i -X POST
-H "Authorization: token ***"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"inputs":{},"ref":"テスト"}'
