Hi everyone,
I’m writing to understand whether anyone has experienced a similar situation and how it was resolved.
I recently discovered that my GitHub account appears to be flagged. I hadn’t logged in for quite some time, and when I did, I enabled two-factor authentication. I’m not sure whether the flag might be related to this or to something else.
The issue arises when I try to contact GitHub Support to ask for clarification: in order to proceed, I’m required to enter a phone number to receive a verification code via SMS.
I’m facing two concrete problems here:
1. I’m generally reluctant to share my phone number unless it’s strictly necessary, especially considering that my account is already protected with two-factor authentication and GitHub already has my account details.
2. Where I live, I do not have mobile network coverage, so I cannot receive SMS messages. I do have a stable internet connection, so I could receive verification codes via email or another internet-based method, but this option doesn’t seem to be available. Why is SMS the only supported method?
To avoid complications, I considered deleting my account and creating a new one, but even to delete the account I’m again required to provide a phone number and receive an SMS code to proceed.
At this point I feel stuck: even if I were willing to provide my phone number, I wouldn’t be able to receive the code, and I can’t find an alternative way to contact support or manage my account.
Has anyone had the same issue?
Is there any way to contact GitHub Support without mandatory phone number verification, or to use a verification method other than SMS?
Thank you to anyone who can share their experience or advice.
