Hi everyone,

I’m currently using Copilot Pro and a few days ago I was able to access and use the Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Sonnet models without any issues. However, recently I noticed that these models are no longer appearing in the model selector. There is no error message — they simply disappeared from the available options.

I’d like to know if:
These models were removed temporarily?
There has been a change in model availability for Copilot Pro users?
This could be related to region, account settings, or feature rollout?
Anyone else is experiencing the same issue?

Hi @shaikhabdulmuizzzubair, After looking into the latest GitHub Changelog (March 2026), it's confirmed that Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 have been removed from the GitHub Copilot Student/Complimentary plan.
As part of the recent transition announced on March 12, manual selection of these premium models is now restricted to the paid GitHub Pro ($10/mo), Business, or Enterprise tiers. If you are on a Student or Trial account, you will likely only see the standard GPT models now.

Subject: Same here – they're gone for me too on Student plan

Yeah, I saw the same thing this morning. Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 just vanished from my model dropdown. No warning, no error – just poof.

I'm on the GitHub Student Developer Pack (free Copilot), and after digging around, I found the March 12th changelog entry that u/shiva confirmed above. Basically, Anthropic's premium models got moved behind the paid tier. Students and free users only get the base models now.

What I'm seeing now available:

• GPT-4o (still there)
• Claude 3.5 Haiku (basic one)
• Copilot default (whatever that is)

No more:

• Claude Opus 4.6
• Claude Sonnet 4.6

My take: It sucks, but honestly, it was probably inevitable. Those API calls aren't cheap for GitHub. I'm just glad they didn't pull all the Claude models – Haiku is still decent for quick stuff.

If you're a student and really need Opus, your options are basically:

1. Upgrade to Copilot Pro ($10/mo) – but that defeats the student benefit
2. Use Claude.ai directly with your free tier (limits apply)
3. Stick with GPT-4o in Copilot – it's still pretty good for most things

Not the answer I wanted either, but at least now we know it wasn't a bug on our end.

You’re not crazy, same thing happened to me.
A few days ago i could use Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 without any problem, and now they’ve just disappeared from the selector, no error, nothing, from what I’ve been seeing around, it’s not just u, seems like more people are noticing the same thing, most likely it’s some kind of change on github’s side (rollout, testing, etc).
Could also be tied to plan differences or feature flags, but there’s no clear info yet, honestly, it feels more like a temporary change or silent update rather than them being permanently removed but yeah it’s pretty confusing.
