Perhaps others have noticed that unless you are a social media or YouTube celebrity, "selling" free code is just as hard as selling commercial software. Some of the best programmers I have worked with and met are introverts. This means only popular people's projects get noticed.
I just bought a domain called antcontest.com (not live yet). Ant Contest is a play on contestant, where you move the ant to the front. I am just starting to build the site, but my idea is anyone can create a contest. Different types of contests can be created for different programming languages, beginners, or platforms (web / Windows, etc.) and different rules / prizes for each contest.
My thoughts are companies like component vendors or Microsoft of Git Hub or others might sponsor contests, with prizes for project(s) that use their controls or widgets.
For entrANTs, even if you don't win any $$ prize, just having your project get noticed or feedback on ways to make your project better or documentation more clear could help everyone.
Any thoughts, do you like the idea? Any ways to make it more interesting for each participANT *
I have tried having sales and inviting shoplifters, and still some projects that I think are good I can't get anyone to notice.
