Last week I read this story of the core-js main developer. I found it heartbreaking and brought me lots of thoughts about the importance of supporting open-source projects' developers and how to encourage companies to increase their support for this kind of project. In GitHub, it is super easy to find the opensource projects that your organization is based on by visiting: https://github.com/sponsors/explore?account=ORGANIZATION_NAME
We can see for individual Github profiles which projects they are financially supporting. I think it would be great to have an optional similar feature for organization pages as a way for users to know how much each company on GitHub supports open-source projects.
Here is the write-up for this proposal:
Introduction:
Open-source projects have become a vital part of modern software development, and many enterprise companies rely on these projects for their products and services. However, despite the importance of open-source projects, they often lack the financial resources to sustain themselves. Therefore, it is crucial for enterprise companies to support these projects to ensure their continued development and growth.
Proposal:
Github, the world's largest code hosting platform, has introduced a feature that allows open-source project owners to enable the sponsorship feature on their profiles. This feature enables individuals and organizations to support open-source projects by making monthly or one-time contributions. However, currently, there is no way for users to see how much an organization has supported open-source projects or which projects they have contributed to.
Therefore, we propose that Github introduce an optional feature that displays the amount of support an organization has provided to open-source projects. This information could be displayed on the organization's profile, allowing users to see which projects they have contributed to and the amount of financial support they have provided.
Benefits:
This proposed feature would have several benefits for both enterprise companies and the open-source community. For enterprise companies, it would provide a way to showcase their commitment to open-source projects and demonstrate their contributions to the community. Additionally, it would allow them to see which projects they have supported and how much they have contributed, making it easier to track their impact.
For the open-source community, this feature would provide much-needed transparency and accountability, allowing users to see which companies are contributing to which projects. This transparency would help ensure that projects receive the support they need to continue development and growth.
In addition, this feature could also encourage engineers who care about the open-source philosophy to work for companies that prioritize open-source contributions. By showcasing their support for open-source projects, companies can attract qualified engineers who are passionate about contributing to open-source software. This, in turn, can help companies find and hire talented engineers who share their values and are committed to the success of the projects they depend on.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, we believe that this proposed feature would be a valuable addition to Github's platform, providing greater transparency and accountability for the open-source community while also encouraging enterprise companies to support these critical projects. Therefore, we encourage all Github users to vote for this feature and help make it a reality. By doing so, we can help ensure the continued growth and success of open-source projects while also promoting the values of transparency, accountability, and community that are at the heart of the open-source philosophy.
