Only allow merge from development into main

It would be nice in Settings -> Branches -> Branch protection rule to have a Branch name pattern to allow merge field.

I could specify in that field the value ^developpement$ and only the developpement branch will be able to be merged in the branch with that rule (defined in the Branch name pattern).

I was looking for something similar.

For now, you could enable the 'Require a pull request before merging' and set up a github workflow to automatically disapprove any PR's made from any other branch than development into main/master. But, that does come at the cost of not being able to complete the merge through the CLI, making it fairly annoying for private repo's where you don't want to be too strict, but also want to be warned when you're about to make a silly mistake.

Anyone in 2025? I thought the new Rulesets would do this, but I had trouble using it and couldn't quite understand the effect.
