I want to be able to winget install GitHub.CopilotCLI

Proposed solution

WinGet is the native Windows package manager.

Customers on Windows would be able to leverage WinGet to install the Copilot CLI and keep it updated with new releases.

It would also be fantastic if the PR submissions over to https://github.com/microsoft/winget-pkgs were automated with new releases.

With no arguments it opens up a new interactive session. copilot -v should output the version and always exit with 0.

That means we'll likely need a waiver to add the "-v" argument for the portable package. When WinGet runs installation validation it attempts to run any executables. If the return something other than "0" the validation will fail, but a waiver can be added with the appropriate argument to get a "0" output.

Given the wording on the main README.md, I'm suggesting:

GitHub.CopilotCLI.Preview for preview releases.

The workflow can be focused on only publishing preview releases for now. If/when the product has a stable release, we can look at a workflow for stable releases under:

GitHub.CopilotCLI

In this case, using winget install CopilotCLI will install the preview until such time as the stable package ID is published.

Unfortunately, I did a quick check and "AWS Copilot CLI" is already in the repository so it will require some disambiguation (or the full WinGet package ID) unless a reasonable moniker is selected.

Thanks @denelon I suppose there's some conflicting messaging. The CLI is currently released under preview terms instead of GA terms. But I don't think that should affect the winget publishing.

The CLI also publishes pre-releases and stable releases. We just released stable release 0.0.366 https://github.com/github/copilot-cli/releases/tag/v0.0.366
