Boot + Wifi on Asus Vivobook 16 X1607QA

So I'm trying to finish the configuration for my Asus vivobook 16 (I'm the author of this thread on reddit).

Following this, I couldn't find anything inside media ubuntu folder. Not even a random UUID. Just a empty folder. With that, I couldn't boot on my fresh install of ubuntu.

To boot the (USB) system I used the "ASUS Vivobook S15 x1p42100" from the grub entry.

I don't know if I misunderstood the tutorial, but I'm stuck right now.

Could be that the tutorial needs some rework. Experienced some oddities with flash-kernel, and with the Vivobook 16 you will need it.
To your issue: It should be possible to just double-click the KERNEL_PKG drive icon, and it should be mounted.

You need the x1p42100-asus-vivobook-s15.dtb as the dtb file though. I recommend using the 7.1-jg-1-nostubble kernel packages from google drive.

Can't even say how happy I'm seeing linux running on this laptop. I did everything you said there on #61 (comment) and now I'm able to boot. Also, replying this thread using firefox on ubuntu.

But, a little problem. The Wi-Fi doesn't work. I'm using usb tethering with my android. Bluetooth seems to work, but I couldn't connect my android with it. Connection does not succeed.

My best guess is that is something with the DTB, because it is from s15 and I'm on s16.

Seems to be using the right driver for the wireless device. See below:

Running sudo modprobe -r ath11k_pci && sudo modprobe ath11k_pci does not seems to have any effect.

Also, after a short sleep (lid close + lid open), I can't see the network controller anymore even using lspci.

Yeah well its not really useful, let it sleep 😏 Congrats on the bringup though. Which brings us to 2 things that should happen:

1. Someone needs to publish a board file for your ath11k card. Or you can try this yourself. Or we ask @Psydroid if he has one already. Or I can try and guess one. Problem is the data in the Windows driver have a different format, but look very similar (wtf, but useless) and we don't have the tech to create calibration data.
2. I guess its time to open up a separate device tree file for those.

The file (without the .txt extension) needs to replace /lib/firmware/ath11k/WCN6855/hw2.0/board-2.bin.zst. Afterwards, reboot and see if the WLAN comes up.

Yesterday I just tried to install the latest driver from CodeLinaro's repository with the swiss army knife too. The code error changed, but nothing that I think that will help.

Also I know that this wifi question may be get off-topic using this title on the thread, so I'm changing it to something like "Boot + Wifi on Asus Vivobook 16 X1607QA" to better searchability.

I will try what you mentioned in the next hours, since I still need this bad boy to work, sadly on Windows :)

I know you changed the issue, but in case anyone else runs into something similar: I ran into the issue that KERNEL_PKG would not mount if I was using Ventoy. Writing the image directly to a USB, instead of trying to boot from Ventoy solved this for me.

If it was just need to copy the bin file and reload with modprobe (or reboot), didn't work. But the error changed.

Can I get more information for you or do you can point me where can I help or investigate? Also I did some pictures of the current device inside the laptop, maybe it can help somehow.

I'm really willing to get this bad boy to work well with linux.

Okay, no luck again. Two ways to resolve this:

1. use a known-working m.2 card. Could be wcn7850, or any other known-working.
2. we look into the driver and kill that board magic thingie. Chances are its in the firmware, and then we're out of luck.

My recommendation: Simply buy a radxa Wifi7 or wcn7850, like this one for example.

I chatted with a friend about this, maybe we should give it another try with the board file. Will prepare a third version.

And a new attempt. A friend has the Ideapad Slim 3 with a WCN6855. He has also quite new caldata, I used these and also followed how he added the id to regdb. Worth a try at least, could be that there is a match check between caldata and regdb data.
