What are issue dependencies?

Issue dependencies let you define work that must be completed before other work can begin, commonly referred to as "blocked by" or "blocking."

This has consistently been one of the most requested features for planning and tracking.

What you can do with issue dependencies

Mark issues as "blocked by" or "blocking". You can mark up to 50 issues for each relationship.

Just getting started with a POC of using Projects/Issues for the team, so no opinions yet about your questions.

You might get some discussion about semantic differences between using the term "block" vs "depend" (and some votes to support both terms) for this feature, even if the implementation for a system that supports one or both terms is largely the same. I think the difference is in communication clarity when working with teams. To many, "block" has a negative connotation (something unexpected happened that's blocking this, or I'm/we're blocked by some other person/team) while "depend" has a foresight connotation (this issue depends on us finishing this other work, which is all part of the plan). I'm happy with 1 way to say/do it for now.

@evi-liu I agree with @davidmarble. I use "blocked" and "depend" with different purposes, especially when applying Critical Path Method (CPM) for project planning. In this context, these terms help distinguish between different types of task relationships that can impact the project timeline.

Blocked by: For me, this indicates a Finish-to-Start (FS) dependency, where Task-2 cannot even begin until Task-1 is completed. In other words, Task-2 is directly blocked from starting because it is waiting on Task-1 to finish.

Depends on: On the other hand, "depends on" typically refers to a Finish-to-Finish (FF) or Start-to-Finish (SF) relationship. In this case, I can start Task-3, but I cannot finish it until Task-1 is completed. Task-3 is "dependent" on Task-1 for completion, though not necessarily for starting.

These distinctions are important in Critical Path Analysis, where the flow of tasks and their dependencies can directly influence the project's overall timeline. The "blocked by" relationship indicates a strict bottleneck that prevents starting a task, while "depends on" suggests that work on a task can progress, but its completion is contingent on another task finishing.

In addition to "blocked by" and "depends on," there are other useful links for project management in Agile development:

Relates to: Tasks that are related but not dependent on each other, similar to a Start-to-Start (SS) dependency where work can happen concurrently but independently.

Duplicates: Tasks addressing the same issue. This avoids redundant work and helps with backlog prioritization. It’s akin to resolving duplicate dependencies, ensuring teams focus on unique tasks.

Clones: Tracks recurring tasks or bugs. This resembles a Finish-to-Finish (FF) dependency, where multiple tasks may be finished at the same time or follow similar patterns for resolution. This is also helpful for bug tracking and managing technical debt, ensuring similar issues are addressed systematically

Thank you for this feature. I think it is one of the most wanted feature in GitHub Projects and finally we have it!
So far it works as I would expect.

The one feature what I'm missing is a visualization of the dependencies in a graph-like style. I used to use it in JIRA and I think it is very convenient.

It would be nice to see arrows on Roadmap view. Potentially it may be also usable on Kanban view. If arrows have colors it would be even better. Something simple like the following convention.

Assumption: issue_b is blocked by issue_a.

On the Roadmap view I would like to see an arrow pointing from issue_a to issue_b. Then:

• the arrow is green if target date of issue_a is before start date of issue_b
• the arrow is yellow if target date of issue_a is after start date of issue_b, but before target date of issue_b
• the arrow is red if target date of issue_a is after target date of issue_b

Hey @evi-liu, I'm not sure if we have access to the roadmap (Found it: https://github.com/github/roadmap), but I have two questions:

When will we be able to add more than one relationship? It would be great if we could add multiple "blocks" and "blocked by".

Will generic linking like in Jira be supported? For example, my team needs a generic link type such as "relates to" and we would like to be able to add multiple of them.

If there is an ongoing preview right now, we would like to join: @wavera.

When will we be able to add more than one relationship?

You can select up to 50 "blocked by" and "blocking" each today! In the picker, just select multiple issues.

We're going to start with the "blocked by" and "blocking" relationships, but we are considering a more generic "relates to" relationship if there is critical need for it!

Our use case is like this: our design department also uses GitHub and we maintain issue-only repositories for them. When a design task is completed, we create a separate issue for the web or mobile implementation and link it back to the original design task. Currently, we do this by manually adding a link in the issue description, but it would be great if GitHub supported natively.

Hi, thank you very much for this new feature. I was really looking forward to it according to the roadmap and I'm glad that it's already in production.

I have two questions:

• I wanted to ask if there are plans to add some form of notification to this feature in the form that if a task is blocked by one or more tasks and all these tasks are completed, a new comment will be created for the blocked one, for example, like all blocking tasks are finished, for this task it is possible to start with the implementation.
• Have you considered a more prominent notice in the header below the title that the task is blocked by another task? The current form is quite unobtrusive and may be overlooked by the reader of the task.

Is there already a feature request for this? I agree that the "blocked by" feature is great, but it's hard to track when an issue is unblocked and thus can be worked on.

You want to set an issue in external repository as "blocked by" in many cases because of an upstream bug, regression, or missing feature etc.
Currently GitHub does not support that feature; it only supports the same or internal repository.

Have you tried using the back arrow on the selection screen? This will allow you to select another repository, including one in a different org.

I doubt that it covers orgs that you do not belong to. Once you select issues in repositories outside your Enterprise and leave the screen, you will get an "Unexpected error" as the form of a GraphQL error (FORBIDDEN: Unauthorized; path: addBlockedBy) when you are an EMU.
This restriction does not seem to affect on non-EMU users.

Maybe outside of this spesific thing but:
Would be nice if you could add something in Github Project that made it more clear what issue blocked what one in the different views. For example a Column in table that lists what issues blocks an issue.
Or in roadmap view, some arrow between the ones blocked by. Would possibly require for those issues to be sorted together.

Same thing with parent/sub issue on roadmap

Are there plans to support this for pull requests? We currently track blocking/blocked-by relationships with things like a "blocking" label and text like "Blocking #NUMBER" in the PR description. It'd be great to have platform-level support for this!

Workaround: We have the rule to back each PR by an issue. This can then be used with all GH Issues features.

Hey ✌️ not sure if it has been posted already, but what I'd love to see are the following things:

1. A similar UI to the parent/child relationship on the project board, i.e. a progress bar that shows how many issues are still blocking an issue. This could be a field on the board so it can be shown/hidden.
2. Option to filter project board by the number of blocking issues, e.g. blocked-by==0. This is super useful to find ready-to implement issues.
3. What would be really cool is the option to show a dependency graph for a project. It should visualize the dependency hierarchy in a project. The main purpose is to easily identify the blocking issues that have to be solved first.
4. Maybe some markdown support to render the blocking/blocked-by issues list in the description of the issue by using a placeholder, i.e. ![blocked-by], ![blocking-by]. Useful for epics or grouping issues that just want to show the subtasks (blocking issues) in the description.

There's a bug in the REST API. (I've logged a ticket)

In one of my repos, If I try a gh request to add a blocked issue (408) blocked by issue (403), it responds NOT FOUND.... but then adds a blocking relationship to an issue in an external repository belonging to somebody else.
