GitHub Education Transfer

Hi everyone,

I created an account attached to my Uni email. I then applied for GitHub Education which I was granted. However I then lost access to that account and had to create a new account attached to the same email address. When I tried to re apply for GitHub Education I was shown this message:

" There was an error creating the discount request. Errors: Discount request could not be created. Discount request errors: Email address has already been used to obtain an academic discount on GitHub account(s) Original account name. "

Is there any way I can transfer my access to GitHub Education from my old account to my current one? I've tried to contact support but I've heard nothing back. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi @Morgan-Retallick,

Unfortunately, student benefits can't be transferred from one account to another.

It’s not possible to transfer Global Campus benefits over from one GitHub account to another.

However, you are able to merge your accounts, but the account with the benefits would be the main account. You can add your non-academic email from the previous account to the account containing the academic email. If you desire you can then rename this account once merged. For more details check out out the merging of your personal accounts documentation.

Hi Davide Thank you for getting back to me on this issue I really appreciate it. I have seen that this is an option however I cannot access my original account, the one with the benifits on it, which is why I created the new account. you see the problem is both my old and new account are attached to this email. However I lost my 2FA for the original account and got locked out. As such I won't be able to merge it with my current account. Is there a way I can request the deletion of my original account attached to this email ( Named MorganRetallick) and re apply for the GitHub eduactaion benifits on my new account ( Named Morgan-Retallick). Hey @Morgan-Retallick, you're welcome. The only way to claim your benefits with your new account would be to ask support to revoke your student coupon linked to your old account, and then reapply with the new one.

This is common with many universities in Pakistan and other countries where institutional emails are only given to faculty, not students. You can still get the Student Developer
Pack — here's how:

The error you're seeing

That message means GitHub's database has an email domain requirement flagged for Bahauddin Zakariya University. It thinks you must use a @bzu.edu.pk (or similar) email, but since
your university doesn't issue those to students, you need to get that requirement corrected.

What to do:

1. Report the incorrect school configuration to GitHub. Go to https://support.github.com/contact/education and select:
   - "My selected school has incorrect or incomplete information (e.g., domains or campus location)"
   - Explain that Bahauddin Zakariya University does not issue email addresses to students, only to faculty
   - This tells GitHub to update their database so it stops requiring an institutional email for your school
2. While you wait for that fix, apply using document verification:
   - Use your personal email (Gmail, etc.) on your GitHub account
   - When applying, select your school and choose to upload proof of enrollment
   - Upload your student ID card — make sure your name, photo, university name, and current academic year/expiration are clearly visible
   - If your ID card doesn't show dates, also upload a fee receipt or enrollment letter from the current semester — this has been the most reliable document for approval lately
3. Make sure these are in order before submitting:
   - Your GitHub profile name matches the name on your student ID exactly
   - 2FA is enabled on your account
   - Location services are enabled in your browser (submit from Pakistan, ideally near campus or on university WiFi/VPN)
   - Documents are clear, high-resolution images (convert PDFs to PNG if needed)
4. If your school doesn't appear correctly in the dropdown, type the full official name manually: "Bahauddin Zakariya University" — GitHub will still let you proceed and will do a
   manual review.

@roy-heinrich — same approach applies for Aklan State University. Report to GitHub support that asu.edu.ph emails are faculty-only, and apply with your student ID + fee receipt in
the meantime.
