Unable to Verify GitHub Student Developer Pack from China – Any Alternative Methods? #191526
-
🏷️ Discussion TypeQuestion 💬 Feature/Topic AreaVerification Help & Guidance Hi everyone,I’ve been trying to verify my student status for the GitHub Student Developer Pack, but I’m running into some issues and wanted to ask if anyone here has faced something similar—especially those studying in China. Here’s my situation: I don’t have a single standard student ID card. Instead, I have a student ID book (common in Chinese universities). Because of this, my application keeps getting rejected or not accepted. My questions: Is there any alternative or manual verification method available? I’d really appreciate hearing how others in similar situations managed to get verified. |

GitHub’s student verification system (used for the GitHub Student Developer Pack) is optimized for: Single ID cards 👉 A Chinese student ID book breaks all 3: Multiple pages ❌ So the system (and even human reviewers) struggles to validate it quickly. ✅ What actually works (real strategies) avoid the ID book entirely and use ONE of these: Official Enrollment Certificate (在读证明) 👉 These have a much higher success rate than ID books. 📸 2. If you must use the ID book (how to do it properly) Most people fail because of how they upload it. Take multiple clear photos, not one Machine translation alone often fails. Instead: Add a typed English explanation alongside the image: Example: This is my official student ID book issued by [University Name].
All original content is in Chinese, with translation provided for clarity. 👉 This helps human reviewers approve faster. 🎥 4. Camera verification workaround Yeah, this part sucks with a booklet. Open to the most important page only 👉 You can contact support for manual review Through: GitHub Education support form say: You're in China This often gets escalated to a human reviewer. Pls Upvote if this helps |

Hi @hasanulkabir-md , I've seen this question come up quite a bit from students in China specifically, so let me address each of your questions properly:
Take two separate clear photos of each page rather than trying to show everything at once — this is much better than cramming it all into one frame
Instead:
University email — If your university gave you an email like @stu.pku.edu.cn or similar .edu.cn address, use that as your GitHub email and apply. This is the single easiest path and often gets auto-approved without needing any document at all University enrollment certificate (在校证明) — Get this from your academic affairs office (教务处). It's on official letterhead with a stamp and is very commonly accepted
Your student ID book photos (the relevant pages) The CHSI letter + university email combo is honestly the most reliable path for students in China. Hope this gets you approved! If this helped, feel free to mark it as the accepted answer — it'll help other students in the same situation find the solution faster! 😊 |

Hey! 👋 Don't worry, you're not alone — many students from China face this exact issue. Here are some tips that can help: Accepted Documents (Alternatives to ID Card) Enrollment letter from your university (official, with stamp) Handling Chinese Documents Use Google Translate's camera mode to add English overlay Camera Verification Tips Film in good lighting — near a window works well 🔁 If It Still Gets Rejected Wait 24 hours and reapply with a different document Tip Using your official university email during signup is the single biggest factor in getting approved quickly! |

Hu @hasanulkabir-mdVerifying GitHub Student Pack with a Chinese Student ID BookI faced a similar situation as an online student with non-standard ID formats. Here’s what worked: ✅ Tips and Workarounds
✅ Key AdviceEven non-standard IDs and foreign language documents can be accepted, but clarity and translation are crucial. Human review via email often works better than relying only on the camera interface. |

submitting high-quality photos of your Chinese student ID book (with translations), using your official school email to bypass automatic checks, or submitting a support ticket for manual review |

GitHub’s student verification system (used for the GitHub Student Developer Pack) is optimized for:
Single ID cards
English or easily machine-readable text
Clear name + school + expiration date
👉 A Chinese student ID book breaks all 3:
Multiple pages ❌
Chinese text ❌
Hard to capture in one image ❌
So the system (and even human reviewers) struggles to validate it quickly.
✅ What actually works (real strategies)
🔥 1. Use an official enrollment proof instead (BEST option)
avoid the ID book entirely and use ONE of these:
Official Enrollment Certificate (在读证明)
Tuition receipt with:
Name
School
Current term/date
Student portal screenshot (with URL visible)
👉 These have a much higher success rat…
