It's GitHub's implementation choice, not Anthropic crippling the model: When GitHub Copilot integrates Claude models like Opus 4.6, they access it through Anthropic's API as a third-party integration. GitHub then sets their own context window limits based on: Infrastructure costs — larger context windows consume significantly more compute, and GitHub has to balance this across millions of Copilot users Latency requirements — Copilot is designed for fast inline suggestions and chat responses, so extremely large contexts would slow response times noticeably Their own API configuration — GitHub can cap the context they send per request regardless of what the model technically supports Claude Code is different because: Claude Code is Anthropic's own native product built specifically around Claude's full capabilities. Anthropic controls the entire stack there — no third-party infrastructure limits apply. So you get the full context window as Anthropic intended. Was it Anthropic who enforced it? Almost certainly not. Anthropic's API offers the full context window to anyone who pays for it. It's GitHub's product decision to cap it within Copilot, likely for cost and performance reasons across their massive user base. This is the same reason other integrated models in Copilot also don't always perform at their full documented specs. Think of it like streaming services — a movie studio releases a 4K film, but a streaming platform might cap it at 1080p due to their own bandwidth and infrastructure decisions.
