Great question and the answer comes down to how GitHub integrates third-party models versus how Anthropic deploys them natively.

It's GitHub's implementation choice, not Anthropic crippling the model:

When GitHub Copilot integrates Claude models like Opus 4.6, they access it through Anthropic's API as a third-party integration. GitHub then sets their own context window limits based on:

Infrastructure costs — larger context windows consume significantly more compute, and GitHub has to balance this across millions of Copilot users

Latency requirements — Copilot is designed for fast inline suggestions and chat responses, so extremely large contexts would slow response times not…
