Title: Full-waveform earthquake source inversion using simulation-based inference

Short description: A novel application of simulation-based inference for seismology. Seismic noise is complex and often seismologists make simplying assumptions; e.g. standard Gaussian likelihood assumptions, to treat inference problems. We introduce SBI in a seismological context, and apply it to earthquake source inversion. We use coverage testing to show that common Gaussian likelihood assumptions produce overconfident posteriors that underestimate parameter uncertainties by up to a factor of 3. On the other hand, SBI produces accurate posteriors with trustworthy uncertainty estimates.
